WORKPLACE safety is very important for each and every employee in the industry. A safe work environment produces happier employees, with health and safety a key component in ensuring the wellness of both them and their employers.
It is important that employees understand the potential hazards in their work environment.
Ongoing training is useful and effective, as it ensures they are educated on proper workplace procedures, practices, and behaviour to prevent possible injuries.

The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is providing a professional development opportunity for prospective students in employment to learn more about health and safety in the workplace.
Starting July 22 and finishing on 15 November, SIT will be offering two classes a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 5.30pm to 7.45pm for 17 weeks. These classes will provide
students with an opportunity to study the MGT222 Health and Safety in Employment paper on- site at their Invercargill Campus.

This paper presents students with an overview of health and safety in employment situations and the development of strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of work-related injury and illness.
The paper will be taught by Nick Perham who has extensive experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field, spending five years as an Assessment Manager with WorkSafe NZ (Southland).
Successful completion of the Level 6 paper can lead students into either the

  • NZ Diploma in Workplace Health and Safety
    Management (Level 6)
  • or the Graduate Diploma in Human
    Resource Management (Level 7)

Whether you are already working in a health and safety role, or you are looking to enter the industry, a qualification in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) will teach you skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to employment or further training in the industry.
