Men’s Masters take on South Island competition

A six-strong Southland men’s masters team will contest the South Island Interprovincial at North Otago Golf Club this weekend.

The team (in playing order) includes: Peter Buckley, Simon Boland, Doug Carmichael, Ngarimu Paraki, Glen Sutherland and Mark Horgan.

Southland will compete against Otago, Canterbury, Tasman and Aorangi in a bid for the South Island title. The tournament is also seen as an important step on the way to the national Freyberg Masters, set to be played in November.

Gilmour Rosebowl

Riverton has successfully retained the Gilmour Rosebowl after defeating Drummond 4-1 last week.

Individual results were: Debbie O’Connell defeated Susan Racz 3/2, Judith Tecofsky defeated Mary-Anne Lindsay 4/3, Emma MacCallum defeated Faye Dudfield 5/4, Vera Kerr lost to Darlene Kincaid 2 down and Gail Clark defeated Joan Scarlett 3/2.

Riverton’s next challenge will be from Mataura.

Upcoming tournaments

Mataura Golf Club’s Spring Fling is on this Sunday. The three-person ambrose tournament is open to any combination of men or ladies, and non-golfers are very welcome. At just $25 per person, with a free BBQ on course and an 11am tee off time, the day promises to be plenty of fun. The tournament is limited to 28 teams, so get your entry in to [email protected]

The Winton Lions Club’s annual charity golf tournament, raising funds for the IHC, will be played on Sunday at Winton. The tournament is open to teams of four (at least three players to hold current handicaps). Start times are between 11.30am and 1pm and the cost is $100 per team which includes an on-course BBQ and afternoon tea. Entries can be made to [email protected].

Southland Matchplay Championships

The 2020 Southland Matchplay Championships got underway at Winton Golf Club on Saturday, but Sunday’s bad weather forced the second day of play to be cancelled. Organisers are working through options, with the year’s golfing calendar already heavily disrupted.
