MLT Presidents Pennants

The semi-finalists for the 2020 MLT Presidents Pennants have been found, with the semi-finals and finals to be contested at Gore on September 19.

Invercargill A will play Winton and Invercargill B will face Greenacres for a place in the final as they bid for the 2020 title.

The last round-robin matches played out at Invercargill Golf Club over the weekend.

In Section One, Invercargill A defeated Greenacres 2 ½ – 1 ½. Individual results were: Liam Balneaves lost to Jason Osbourne 2/1, Liam Hewitt squared with Daniel Mills, Craig O’Rorke beat Luke Harvey 5/3 and Paul Adams beat Chris Sherlock 5/3. Invercargill C had the bye.

In Section Two Winton drew 2-all with Gore. Individual results were: Simon Boland beat Simon Hollyer, Peter Buckley beat Glenn Brinsdon, Ewan Clark lost to Glen Sutherland and Max Schuster lost to Bryan Burgess. Invercargill B had the bye.

Southland rep teams named

Southland’s representative golfers will get into action this weekend, with women’s and men’s teams taking on their Otago counterparts at St Clair in Dunedin.

The women’s team to contest the Salisbury Cup is: Robyn Pullar, Geraldine Todd, Helen Baird, Fiona Murray, Bronwyn O’Brien, Kate McGregor, Tuani Marshall and Dayna Kaio and the manager is Anita Fraser.

The senior men’s team includes Matt Tautari, Tyler McLean, Liam Hewitt, Liam Balneaves, Josh Kalwiet, Robbie Mainland, Bryan Cantley, George Prendergast and Brad Harper (one to be added).

The men’s masters team is Simon Hollyer, Simon Boland, Doug Carmichael, Peter Buckley, Glen Sutherland, Ngarimu Paraki, Ewan Clark and Mark Horgan.

Two juniors will also play – Connor Fowle and Matthew McLellan.

Queens Park Club Championships

Queens Park’s Club Championships were decided recently, with a great crowd of players and supporters on hand to enjoy the occasion.

The 36-hole matches played out in good conditions (largely thanks to efforts of the greenkeepers), and were supported by the Saucy Chef – welcome support in what is a tough time for sport.

Liam Hewitt won the Senior title over Ngarimu Paraki. Liam had the lead at lunch time, but with the wind getting up in the afternoon, there were very different conditions after that. Both players adapted well, but Liam played steady golf to get the win on the 14th green.

Mark Boniface won the Intermediate final, over Jeff Mowat. Jeff was 2 up early in the piece, but by lunch Mark was back to 1 up. Playing a strong short game, Mark managed to get the win on the 14th green in the afternoon.

Matt Pettersson took out the Junior A title, getting ahead of Dan Tipene early on, before the scores levelled out. A couple of good putts on holes 10 and 11 sealed the deal for Matt.

Good mates Rod Forbes and Bill McRandle contested the Junior B final. Rod got ahead early and was six up at one stage, eventually going on to win 3 and 2 in what was the closest match of the day.
