On Monday, August 17, 2026, peacefully at Dunedin Public Hospital surrounded by his loved ones; age 76. Dearly loved husband and soul mate of Debbie, dearly loved father and father-in-law of Andrew, Kaye and Gerard, Tina, Ngaire and Shay, and Rebecca and James. Dearly loved Grandad of Nardia, Jamie, Forde, Natalia, Nakaysha; Samanta, and Kegan. Dearly loved by his great-grandchildren. Dearly loved brother of his brothers and sister. Peacefully on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at home in Ettrick, after a battle with cancer, aged 80 years. Dearly loved husband of the "Angel of John's Life" Averill, loved father of Dean, and Tania, and grandfather of all his mokopuna. Son of Phyliss* and Alf*, brother and brother-in-law of Alan and Kay (Clyde), Judith* and John Doyle (Invercargill). Many thanks to Vanessa, and Lauren at Dunedin Oncology; Carmen, Courtney, and Rachel at Dunstan Hospital for always being there with a smile; the district nurses Jane, and Saskai; and the doctors at Roxburgh Medical Centre.
