A new community fund has been launched to help secure the future of ILT Stadium Southland, giving locals a simple way to support one of the region's busiest facilities.
The Friends of the Stadium Fund has started with a $100,000 donation from an anonymous Southlander, managed through a partnership with the Southland Foundation. The fund will provide ongoing support for the stadium that sees more than 550,000 visitors each year.
Users include children playing their first sports, high-performance athletes, schools, community groups, families and event audiences.
ILT Stadium Southland General Manager Jo Hutton said the fund reflects how important the venue is to the region.
"This is one of Southland's most used community facilities. We see every day how many different people rely on the stadium for sport, events, connection and activity," Hutton said.
"The Friends of the Stadium Fund gives people a practical way to support a place they already use and value. It will help us maintain the stadium, keep it accessible, and plan confidently for the future."
The fund operates as an endowment, meaning donations are invested and the returns used over time to support maintenance, improvements and sustainability while protecting the original contributions.
Southland Foundation General Manager Robyn Koehler said the focus is on creating lasting impact for the stadium and the community.
"In time, the aim is to grow this community group fund to a level where it provides a sustainable funding stream supporting ILT Stadium Southland as a vital community asset. It is a wonderful and meaningful way for those of us who have benefited from this venue over many years to give back, ensuring future generations have the same opportunity to enjoy and use such a fantastic and valued facility."
Money raised will support both small upgrades and long-term improvements, including maintaining busy spaces, supporting affordable community access, and keeping courts and facilities open and fit for purpose.
Contributions are open to everyone, with donations starting from just $5.
"This is about collective support," Hutton said. "Whether someone gives a small amount or something more significant, it all contributes to the stadium's future."
