Flybuys to End After Nearly Three Decades in New Zealand

Flybuys, one of New Zealand’s most well-known loyalty schemes, will conclude its services at the end of 2024. This decision comes after nearly 30 years of rewarding Kiwis since its launch in 1996.
Loyalty NZ CEO Lizzy Ryley expressed pride in the programme’s achievements over the years, highlighting its role in helping New Zealanders save money and enjoy rewards. Ryley noted that the landscape for loyalty programmes has evolved, with businesses now capable of creating tailored proprietary schemes. As a result, the Flybuys model, based on a service and retailer alliance, will end.
Members can continue to earn Flybuys until October 31 and redeem their points until December 31, 2024. Ryley emphasized that the extended notice period aims to give members ample time to use their points, particularly during the busy Christmas season. She also expressed gratitude to the millions of New Zealanders who supported Flybuys over the past 28 years.
Alongside the closure of Flybuys, Loyalty New Zealand will also wind down its operations. In a related development, IAG New Zealand announced its acquisition of certain assets from Loyalty New Zealand and will offer employment to approximately one-third of its staff. This move aims to leverage Loyalty New Zealand’s technology and expertise to enhance IAG’s ongoing business transformation and customer experience efforts.
