During the school holidays, kids were choosing artworks from the City’s art collection for the next Invercargill Public Art Gallery exhibition.
Under-18s were able to choose from 70 images of artworks covering the walls of a special space at the 5 Don Street pop-up gallery.

A wide-ranging 46 artworks were chosen by over 100 children and young people, including Ralph Hotere’s Banner – Window in Spain and Pat Hanly’s Living Room.
The children’s reasons for their choices are compelling and have been included in the exhibition’s curation. “I love abstract art, plus the colours make it stand out!”, wrote eleven-year-old Hannah Dudfield.
A group of twenty pre-schoolers from Queens Park Early Childhood Education also participated. After choosing his favourite artwork, spending time in the exhibition and enjoying the children’s activities, two-year-old Axel Cull was heard saying to his friend, “It was cool yay, it’s very coooool”.
