This year’s Southland Diwali Festival of Lights is set to be bigger and better than ever before, with hundreds of people expected to converge upon ILT Stadium to celebrate the start of the Indian New Year.
The festival, which is hosted by Indian Community Southland Incorporated, sponsored by More FM and supported by Ray White, is not only a way in which to recognise the Indian New Year but bring families together for fun and entertainment.
A North Indian traditional dance group would be travelling from Hamilton to perform Gidha and Bhangra routine, and visitors could dance the day away to an Auckland-based Bollywood DJ as well. There would also be a live band, children’s section with arts and crafts, a bouncy castle, and Invercargill magician Wayne McEwan. Invercargill’s mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt was also expected to make an appearance.
According to the festival’s organisers, Vinay Sood and Arick John, the Diwali Festival of Lights is an iconic festival for India. The Indian New Year encompasses the exchanging of gifts, lighting up homes to attract wealth and prosperity, and bringing the community together.
With the festival expected to be bigger and better for 2019, it’s an excellent opportunity to experience family fun, entertainment, and spirituality. Bring the family along to the ILT Stadium from 2pm until 8pm on Saturday.
