A jewel of the Fiordland community was celebrated today.

Judy Matthews received a Community Service Award from Southland District Council and the Fiordland Community Board, reflecting her outstanding commitment to the area.

The award was presented by Mayor Rob Scott, who said she was a “driving force” behind many community groups. The citation included a lengthy list of organisations and events that have benefited from Mrs Matthews’ dedication.

“Judy is a highly respected member of the community here in Fiordland and her leadership, passion and willingness to give of her time and expertise make her truly deserving of this accolade,” Mayor Scott said.

Since moving to Fiordland in 1976 with her husband Tony and their young family, she has played a pivotal role in a wide range of activities, from education and sport to arts and culture.

An active member of the Te Anau Primary School committee while her children were in attendance, Mrs Matthews went on to serve on the board of trustees where she remains as the present secretary.

She also held key positions in both the Te Anau Golf Club and Te Anau Hockey Club.

Inheriting a passion for horticulture from her mother, the qualified florist is the long-serving convener of the Te Anau Flower Show. Bringing together floral enthusiasts from throughout Southland and Otago, the event has thrived under her guidance and attracts hundreds of entries, including hosting the prestigious South Island National Daffodil Show.

Mrs Matthews’ sense of community is also reflected in her involvement with the Association of Women (AAW) Te Anau.
