Anna Star is someone who truly lives up to her surname.

Highly respected for the positive impact she makes across all facets of life, Mrs Star was bestowed with a Community Service Award today by Southland District Council and the Fiordland Community Board.

The award was presented by Mayor Rob Scott, who said she was “a champion for community wellbeing”. The citation featured a plethora of local organisations that have benefited from her involvement over the years.

“Every community needs someone like Anna who has such a dedicated focus on wellbeing and inclusivity to support those around her,” Mayor Scott said.

“You only have to read the numerous letters of endorsement which accompanied her nomination to appreciate the significance of her vast community involvement, particularly with regards to helping others.”

Her dedication extends far beyond the realms of her part-time role as community wellbeing
co-ordinator and she is actively engaged as a volunteer with the Fiordland Families Network, Breastfeeding Peer Support, Fiordland Community Kai, Te Anau Wholefoods, Plunket and the Fiordland Community Garden.

Mrs Star is a natural connector, described as a “dot-joiner”, who brings people and groups together, strengthening Te Anau’s support networks and finding practical solutions to local needs.  She has facilitated regular coffee groups for seniors and newcomers and was instrumental in the establishment of Matariki Hampers for senior residents.

Testament to her passion, she even drafted a maternity services submission while nursing her one-day-old newborn. Even a stint spent stationed on the remote Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds didn’t stop her connecting online into various meetings.

Recognised as caring, resourceful and deeply committed, her leadership, initiative and generosity make her a truly deserving award recipient.
