A young child is in a critical condition and two teenagers have been charged after a serious injury at an Otautau address on Sunday night.

Emergency services were called to the property at around 6:50pm. The child was taken to Southland Hospital, where they remain in a critical condition.

As a result of police enquiries, a 19-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman have each been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They will appear in the Invercargill District Court later today.

Detective Inspector Stu Harvey said police have launched an investigation.
