Chemical Spill Shuts Down Gore Street

Five fire crews are at a Gore transport depot this afternoon after a 1000-litre chemical spill triggered evacuations of nearby buildings.

Fire and Emergency were called to Mainfreight Transport on Oldham Street shortly after 2pm. A large container had been pierced, spilling its contents onto the ground.

Road closures are in place around the site. Crews are diluting and neutralising the chemical. No injuries have been reported.

What the chemical is — and how the container was pierced — is not yet known. Fire and Emergency said there is no risk to the public.
