- Bluff event returns with music, market stalls, and a dramatic fire and light show
- Gore’s glowing celebration includes performers, learning experiences and indoor spaces for warmth
- Both events are free and designed for all ages to mark Matariki in style
Bluff and Gore are preparing to light up the night as they each host special events celebrating the Matariki holiday weekend.
In Bluff, the popular Night Market and Fire & Light Show will return on Saturday 21 June at the Oyster & Food Festival site. Following strong attendance last year, organisers are expanding the event with more stalls, food trucks, and new entertainment.
“This year, with the Invercargill event being cancelled, we’ve had extra interest from vendors,” said organiser Frazer Murdoch.
Live music is a major new feature for 2025, with performances from ukulele group Don’t Fret, Nolan Henigan and friends. Murdoch also hinted at one more act still to be announced.
Stalls will showcase a wide variety of crafts and goods, while several food trucks will be on hand to serve up treats. A striking fire and light show will be a highlight of the evening, featuring fire poi and decorated fire drums under the stars.
The free event will run from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. Covered areas at the site will keep shoppers dry, while the open-air light show adds to the festive atmosphere. Murdoch welcomes any stallholder enquiries at 0278 506 261 or [email protected].
Two days earlier, on Thursday 19 June, the Gore Gardens will host Kāhui Whetū, a vibrant festival of lights that has become a key part of the region’s Matariki celebrations.
“The event has grown rapidly every year,” said Gore District Council Events Coordinator Florine Potts. “This year promises to be bigger and better than ever.”
Thanks to Mercury’s support, the event will once again feature its iconic giant tipi, which this year will include an educational space to learn about Matariki traditions.
Entertainment includes Stella the Glow Fairy, a glowing princess, a fire performer, and neon face-painting stations. Emmy Rodrique and Maia Fletcher will provide live music, while Gravity Events will turn the gardens into a vivid light show. A warm indoor dining area will offer a cosy space for food and relaxation, supported by Community Trust South.
Kāhui Whetū will also run from 5.00pm to 9.00pm, and is free for all ages. Potts encourages families to make the trip, saying it’s the perfect winter outing regardless of the weather.
