Golden tickets have been turning up in menus at the Speight’s Ale House in Invercargill the entire month of May for the brewery’s 150th birthday.
Customers dining in have been treated to instant prizes such as Speight’s branded Crocs, chiller bags, hats and drink bottles “and it’s been a full month of happy guests so far,” ILT marketing and innovation manager Angee Shand said.
This Saturday night the bar is getting decorated and El Scratcho will be playing some great tunes - they’ll also continue with the giveaways in the lead up to the big main prize draw on June 2.
“It’s really about Invercargill getting together to share memories and celebrate what truly is an icon of the South,” she said.
Those who dined in the restaurant during May are in the main prize draw to win a trip for two to the Dunedin for a brewery tour, accommodation and dinner out.
The Speight’s Ale House opened in Dee Street in 2006 - Angee said keep an eye out for their own 20th birthday celebrations later in the year.
“We are renowned for delicious food served in generous portions (living up to our ‘generous to a fault’ mantra), cold beers and a warm welcome.
“Whether you come with a group or by yourself, you will find your place at Speight’s. We pride ourselves on our uncomplicated approach to hospo – if you are in our place, we’ll take care of you. It’s that simple.”
Like all great Southern yarns, the 150 years of Speight’s story started with three mates and a bloody good idea.
Back in 1876, James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson started brewing on Rattray Street in Dunedin — creating a beer that would become known as The Pride of the South.
150 years later, Speight’s is still doing what it does best… bringing people together over cold pints, hearty feeds, live sport, tall tales and proper Southern hospitality.
Angee said like the Speight’s brand itself, they’ve moved with the times. Guests can now choose from a range of on-tap products including Emerson’s varietals “and there’s always a cider on hand as well.”
“In the fridge we have a great range of RTDs, and our team are adept at whipping up a cocktail or two of an evening.
“A full low and no-alcohol offering means we cater for everyone. Live music is a regular weekend feature, and we love seeing a full dance floor but also have a space for the less energetic to relax and enjoy the sounds.”
