Dyslexia in Southland =1 in 10, 63 classrooms, 1763 children

A first for Southland. Local Education Trust – Learning Differences Aotearoa is taking the initiative and celebrating learning differences, especially dyslexia during the week of 1-5 October. LDA will be running programmes and sharing information at the Invercargill City Library during.

The celebrations begin on Monday night 1 October with the Adult Dyslexia Support group’s first official meeting. This will be followed on 2 and 3 October with ‘Growing Stars’ workshops for children. The Growing Stars workshops are to help children aged 6-12 years to understand and manage the emotional impact of living with a learning difference.

Dyslexia is a learning difference that makes it harder for people to learn to read, write and spell. They can learn to do these things but it takes more effort, more time and an understanding of how their brain works.

This learning difference also means dyslexics have the unique ability to see the big picture.

On Dyslexia Awareness Day- 4 October, a special information stand will be manned by members of the trust from 9am-3pm at the Invercargill City library as well as children workshops for Dyslexia Support Southland members.

LDA’s Learning Differences advisor Chris Cole said” We want to raise awareness of learning differences. To celebrate and empower people who think differently.”
