Armed police descended on Avenal on Friday morning, executing multiple search warrants linked to a burglary that occurred around May this year.

Several people have been arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. More arrests and charges are expected.

Police would like to reassure the public and community that there is no ongoing risk or danger to the public.

The operation drew a significant presence, with witnesses reporting armed defenders on scene from around 6am through to midday. One resident told whatsoninvers.nz the situation was alarming for locals caught up in it.

"Was quite frantic, armed police wouldn't let my daughter leave the house she was staying at to go to school due to road block, went on from like 6am-12pm. Arm defenders there for quite sometime."

The warrants appear to be part of a broader investigation rather than a spontaneous response — the burglary they relate to dates back several months, suggesting police have been building a case for some time.
