Police responded to reports of gunshots being heard in Invercargill where one person has been injured.

Police can now confirm that the person injured in an incident in Invercargill this morning was shot.

Cordons remain in place as Police work to locate the offender and members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the Kelvin Street area at the time of the shooting (around 9.15am) and saw anything which could assist our enquiries.

What we know:

  • one person had been taken to Southland Hospital with a serious leg injury
  • Police are working to establish how the shooting happened, and the armed defenders squad have been called as a precaution.
  • St John Ambulance were called to the intersection of Kelvin and Earnslaw St at 9.10am, the spokesman said.
  • He could not confirm how the person was injured.
  • It is not known how the shooting happened and whether anyone has been arrested.
