The eleventh Youth Parliament will be taking place in Wellington this year, allowing young people from across the country – including Southland – to make their voices heard.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a young person living in the Invercargill electorate to learn first-hand how democracy works and to represent their community and young people across the province.
Youth Parliament offers a unique development opportunity, and previous candidates have found the experience extremely valuable for understanding the political process.
I’m delighted that someone from Southland will be chosen to undertake this role, with applications open now (3 Feb). I have also written to Southland secondary schools, encouraging students to apply.
The two-day event will take place at Parliament in July, with the full programme for participants running from late April to August.
Up to 123 young people will be selected as Youth Members of Parliament (Youth MPs), with the opportunity to advocate for their communities and debate the issues they are passionate about.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for a young person from the South to make their voice heard in Wellington. Youth MPs will talk to young people in their schools and communities and bring those perspectives directly to Parliament.
Applications for Youth Parliament participants open this week and close at 12 noon on Friday, 28 February 2025.
Youth Parliament only happens every three years – once in a Parliamentary term – and provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for a local Youth MP to work with me and discuss topics and issues that young people in Southland are passionate about.
I encourage a wide range of young people across the province to consider applying for this exciting opportunity.
