Triroyale Brigade pushed better-known horses to claim victory in the Wyndham Cup feature race at Wyndham on Saturday.
Paying $12.50 to win, the Better Have Tried syndicate-owned horse was not expected to win.
Syndicate member, Murray Mckeown of Balfour, said it was a real shame most of the syndicate didn’t attend the meet.
“We go to all of his other bloody races, and he wasn’t meant to win,” Mr Mckeown said.
Triroyale Brigade’s syndicate owners have real Southland connections, coming from Balfour, Gore and Invercargill.
The Wyndham Cup – originally a New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club cup – was donated to the Wyndham Harness Racing Club by AL Milne. It has been claimed twice by Franco Ledger, and features previous winners Bondy and Sagwitch. Triroyale Brigade’s syndicate will have his name etched on the Wyndham Cup and hold it until 2021.
