Alex Little of Lower Hutt took opening day honours in the NZ Super Trucks at Teretonga Park in Invercargill today.
Little, in a Freightliner Century, led the way from Troy Wheeler of Papakura in a similar truck to win the first of four races for the weekend at the second round of the NZ Super Truck Championship. Dave West of Pukekohe was third in his Freightliner Argosy with local driver Garry Price of Winton in an International Transtar fourth.
In the Mobil 1 Mainland Muscle Cars it was Dunedin driver Michael Wallace who tasted success, taking his Chevy Monza to victory in the opening race, crossing the line .634 seconds ahead of Mosgiel driver Paul Clarke in a Ford Mustang who set a new lap record of 1 minute 02.068 on his way to second. Graeme Allan of Christchurch was third in his Camaro while Tony Mann of Dunedin lost a wheel off his Capri on the final lap of the race.
Other winners today were Dion Dawson of Invercargill in a Saker ahead of his brother Kyle (Nissan GTR Skyline) and Bruce Davidson of Alexandra (Chev C6R Corvette) in the Noel McIntyre Drainage Club Saloons race while Brendon Leitch of Invercargill took the Sports & Racing Car race in his Tatuus FT-40 ahead of his father Barry in the ex-Jacques Laffite/Ken Smith Ralt RT4. Recently crowned NZF1600 Champion Jordan Michels was third in his Mygale. Gary Cooper of Dunedin also set a lap record in this race lapping his Reynard 92H in 56.388 seconds only to crash, ending his race the following lap.
NZ1 Blair Sutherland of Alexandra won the NZ Six Saloon race from Josh Hack (Alexandra) and Alvin Frew (Waikouaiti), all three driving Holden Commodores.
Tomorrow’s action starts at 10am with three more races each for the NZ Super Trucks and Mainland Muscle Cars plus plenty of other races including the A1 Auto Services 1 Hour Race.
Entry fee on Sunday is $20 at the gate with children 14 & under free if accompanied by an adult.
