Cycling Southland hosted events on road and track over the weekend, with repeat winners taking the main prizes.In the ILT New Year Track Carnival, hosted at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome on Friday and Saturday, Marshall Erwood became the first rider to etch his name on the Cycling Southland wheel race trophy for a second time as he took a nail-biting win in the senior wheel race that concluded racing on Saturday.In the junior wheel race, Finn Edwards claimed the OJ Henderson Memorial Trophy for the second time, having previously won it in 2021. There were also some great performances in the invitational races on Friday evening, with Geertien Venter claiming the women’s invitational Keirin, Magnus Jamieson taking the win in the men’s invitational Keirin, and Erwood taking out the invitational moto scratch race.There were also some great performances by Jamie Russell (under 13), Ollie Keast (under 15), Emily Forsyth (under 17 girls) and Finn Edwards (under 17 boys), who dominated their respective divisions, while the spoils were more evenly shared in C grade (Ruth Whelan, Erin Criglington, Charlotte Paddon) and B grade (Meg Baker, Neil Familton, Caitlin Kelly), while Jamieson and Erwood were the two dominant riders in A grade.The weekend’s racing concluded with the Ascot Park Hotel New Year Criterium, with riders racing in perfect weather on a circuit around the Ascot Park Hotel. In the A grade race, Hunter Gough raced aggressively from the start, and won the sprint for the line, taking the title for the second year running. Other winners were Ollie Keast (under 15 boys), Lily Keast (under 15 girls), Finn Edwards (under 17 boys), Kyra Marret (under 17 girls), Stephenp OThreadgall (C grade), and Andy Beale (B grade).Related:
