• Wools of New Zealand welcomes Kāinga Ora’s decision to reconsider wool carpet in tenders.
  • The government supports wool, highlighting its benefits for homes, farmers, and exports.
  • Kāinga Ora will allow wool carpet suppliers to compete for contracts alongside synthetic options.

Wools of New Zealand has expressed its support for Kāinga Ora’s decision to re-open its carpet tender, allowing wool carpet suppliers to compete for contracts.

Chief Executive of Wools of New Zealand, John McWhirter, described the decision as “a sensible decision and a positive move.” He emphasised that the company had only asked for “an opportunity to tender for the contract” and confirmed that Wools of New Zealand would be submitting a bid.

McWhirter highlighted the unique benefits of wool carpets, stating that wool is “completely natural, allergy & asthma safe, fire-safe and warmer.” He added that including wool carpets in public buildings, schools, and social housing could help create healthier homes while supporting local farmers and promoting the environmental benefits of wool.

He also pointed out that prioritising wool carpets in government buildings could influence other governments to follow suit, boosting export opportunities for New Zealand’s wool industry.

Housing Minister Chris Bishop and Associate Agriculture Minister Mark Patterson also welcomed the move. Bishop explained that Kāinga Ora had initially excluded wool carpets from the tender process to remain fiscally responsible. However, this decision meant New Zealand wool suppliers were unable to compete.

“The coalition Government is proudly pro-wool. It’s a fantastic fibre, and we support our wool farmers,” Bishop stated. He welcomed Kāinga Ora’s revised approach, saying that while cost-effectiveness remains crucial, wool carpets should have an equal chance to compete against synthetic alternatives.

Patterson echoed these sentiments, describing the decision as “a great step toward ensuring wool, a sustainable and high-quality product, is given the fair consideration it deserves.” He also encouraged wool carpet suppliers to participate in the tender process.

The Government remains committed to supporting wool, with a National-New Zealand First coalition agreement including a directive for government agencies to prefer wool where practical. Further details on this initiative are expected to be announced soon.
