A powerful weather system is forecast to bring significant disruption to southern parts of New Zealand on Thursday. MetService has issued multiple Orange Warnings for heavy rain and severe gales, urging residents in Fiordland, Southland, Clutha and Stewart Island to prepare for hazardous conditions.
An active front tied to a deep low-pressure system will sweep across the lower South Island during the day, with strong rain and wind warnings already in place.
Fiordland will be hit first, with a Heavy Rain Warning in effect from 1:00am to 11:00am Thursday. Up to 200 mm of rain is expected in northern areas of the region, with hourly peaks between 30 and 40 mm. Thunderstorms are also possible.
MetService warns: “Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.” People are urged to clear gutters and drains, avoid low-lying areas, and drive carefully.
At the same time, a Strong Wind Warning for Fiordland predicts severe northwesterlies gusting up to 120 km/h from 2:00am to 11:00am. A similar wind warning has been issued for Clutha, Southland, and Stewart Island, running from 3:00am to 3:00pm. Gusts could reach up to 130 km/h near the coast as winds shift from northwest to southwest around midday.
“Damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures possible. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles,” says MetService. Residents are advised to secure loose items and avoid travel if possible.
