Heavy rain and northwest gales in the far south today

A front preceded by a strong and moist north to northwest flow moves onto the far south of the South Island this afternoon.

This front is expected to bring a period of heavy northerly rain to Fiordland, and north to northwest gales to exposed parts of southern New Zealand.

Forecast: A period of heavy northerly rain. Accumulations may approach warning criteria. This amount of rain is not unusual for Fiordland.
