Heavy rain and northwest gales in the far south today

A front preceded by a strong and moist north to northwest flow moves onto the far south of the South Island this afternoon.

This front is expected to bring a period of heavy northerly rain to Fiordland, and north to northwest gales to exposed parts of southern New Zealand.

As the weather over the eastern coasts of the North Island improves today with a low moving away to the east another weather feature is quick to ‘move up in the queue’, bringing a deteriorating trend in weather over the lower South Island.
