The biggest video store in Australasia is having a massive clearance starting on Monday.
United Video South City Invercargill currently has 120,000 stock units and owner Daryle Blackler said he wants to offload 80,000 of them.
Also the longest serving video store owner in New Zealand, Daryle has owned United Video for the past 36 years.
Along with wife Kim, they will be getting rid of old box sets and back catalogue DVDs, so come down next week and get yourself a bargain.
“I have been collecting this stuff for 20 years. They are my wee gems.”
The problems is, he has at least six copies of much of his stock and doesn’t need that many anymore – with video stores becoming a sign of the times.
But Daryle and Kim will keep on trucking and by March 2021 he expects they will be the sole video store owner in the country.
“I have got no more room for any more product,” he said.
A lot of the excess stock includes arthouse films and action movies, with famous titles such as Raw Hide, Bonanza, Clockwork Orange, American Graffiti, and Steptoe and Sons.
Daryle and Kim’s video store used to be the size of a supermarket, and although they are downsizing, they are also optimistic that they will still be renting DVD’s in five years time.
“People like to touch, feel and browse,” he said.
You can even buy the all American Twinkies in store, along with Pokemon cards, new and used LP’s, and comics that he also imports from the States.
And his all-time favourite movie? Pulp Fiction. Gotta love it.
The big DVD clearance starts Monday 9am.
