MetService has updated its severe weather alerts for Invercargill and the Southland region, with changes to the timing and conditions expected.
A Heavy Rain Watch is now in effect for Southland from 3:00 PM on Monday, March 17, to 3:00 AM on Tuesday, March 18. The forecast indicates periods of heavy rain, particularly in western parts of the region. While rainfall amounts may approach warning levels, the chance of an official warning upgrade remains low. The Strong Wind Watch has also been revised, now scheduled from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 17. Northwest winds may reach severe gale strength in exposed areas, particularly in Fiordland, Southland, and Stewart Island. There is a moderate chance this could be upgraded to a full warning.
Authorities continue to advise residents to secure outdoor items, clear gutters and drains, and take care when travelling. Conditions may create risks such as surface flooding, slips, and challenging driving conditions.
