Police in Southland have taken action following an illegal street racing incident, impounding two vehicles and charging two men aged 18 and 19. The charges stem from a crash that occurred on 5 November 2024, when a vehicle failed to make a turn on Grove Burn Road and ended up in a paddock. Related: Cyclists Help Catch Thief In Invercargill

According to Police, the vehicles involved were travelling at approximately three times the posted 50km/h speed limit during the incident. This behaviour was classified as antisocial road use.

As part of the investigation, simultaneous search warrants were executed on 17 January at properties in Tuatapere and Winton. Police spoke to the two men involved, and their vehicles were impounded as part of the operation.

The two individuals are set to appear in the Invercargill District Court on 18 February, charged with illegal street racing. Police have also indicated that further charges may be laid.

A Police spokesperson stated, "Police are committed to holding illegal street racers to account as we know the impact this activity has on the community. Not only does it keep residents awake and damage the roads, but it places drivers, passengers, bystanders, and other motorists at extreme risk."

Members of the public are encouraged to report illegal activity, as timely information can help Police respond effectively. "This will assist in an effective response to the issue, and in cases where we can’t immediately respond, allow us to follow up with drivers and take later enforcement action," they said.

Anyone witnessing street racing or other illegal activities is urged to contact Police via 111 if the event is happening immediately or use the 105 service for non-emergencies. Information can also be shared anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
