Long-serving St John Ambulance volunteer Tony McDonald received a Community Servicev Award in Tuatapere on Monday night.
Southland District Mayor Gary Tong presented the award to Mr McDonald at a ceremony at theWaiau Town and Country Club.

The award was made by the Tuatapere Te Waewae Community Board along with Southlandv District Council, following Mr McDonald’s nomination by members of the community.

Mr McDonald has been a St John volunteer ambulance officer in the Tuatapere area for morev than 20 years, working several days a week but always prepared to respond at any time when there is a need in his community.

His nomination says: “Tony works quietly behind the scenes to help our community and his selfless approach is valued by all.”
Fellow Tuatapere St John crew member Sandy MacGillivray said Mr McDonald had unselfishly given his time to assist those in need in the community, at any time of the day or night.

“Your commitment to your community by helping those in their time of need has been amazing.”
She, along with other speakers, thanked Mr McDonald’s wife Bev for her contribution and support. “None of us would be able to commit to being a volunteer without the support of our families to help make this happen.
“As a volunteer member of St John, you do not expect any recognition for the work you do,” she said.
“Tony, you have given freely of your time and energy to both the community and other crew members.

Today is an opportunity for your community to say thank you for all that you do.
“You deserve it.”
