Work to improve the safety for motorists, pedestrians, and other road users will be undertaken this month with the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Deveron and Gala Streets.
Fulton Hogan is contracted to carry out the work on behalf of the Invercargill City Council, which is expected to begin on Monday, January 15.
Council Project Manager Hayden Dennis said Council had been monitoring the intersection and assessed risks associated with it.
“During peak hours there are long wait times for traffic turning right onto Gala Street or travelling straight for Queens Park Crescent or Deveron Street,” Mr Dennis said.
The risk to safety at the intersection was increased by poor visibility for turning traffic, often due to parked cars on Gala Street.
“To improve safety and traffic flows, Council is installing traffic lights at this busy intersection,” Mr Dennis said.
“The new lights will drastically improve pedestrian safety and will enable road users to manoeuvre the intersection more easily with a lot less risk.”
Work on the intersection is expected to continue until late February.
There will be temporary road closures, turning restrictions, 30 km/h speed limits, some parking removed, footpaths closed, and a lot of road cones intermittently throughout the work period, Mr Dennis said.
