Globally-recognised Invercargill hairdresser Adrian Barclay has won another award, but this time there wasn’t a pair of scissors or model in sight.

The 40-year- old took top honours in the men’s physique section at the International Federation of Body Builders (IFBB) Auckland Masters regional competition, earlier this month.
The win came after three years of training which saw Barclay ditch an unhealthy, boozy lifestyle in favour of a more disciplined and nutritious approach.
“I started getting injuries from repetitive work and just had no energy, so I decided to make changes.”
He joined a gym and started regular training. “I started to get more and more into it.”

He set a goal to enter a competition, the Auckland event being the one that fitted in with his busy schedule.
The men’s physique category required entrants to undertake a series of standing poses which showed-off their body conditioning and definition.
“It has been a personal challenge that has seen me reap benefits I couldn’t have imagined. I’m energised, more creative and it’s having a positive impact on my business, too.”
