Noah has once again topped the list as the most popular baby name for boys in New Zealand in 2024, retaining its number one spot for the second year in a row.
On the girls' side, Isla has reclaimed the top position, making a notable return after narrowly missing out in 2023.
“It's great to see Noah holding onto the top spot for boys, with 250 babies receiving the name,” said Minister for Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden on Wednesday.
“Isla is back as the leading name for girls, with 190 babies named Isla. This is the third time in five years Isla has been the number one choice, while Noah has now appeared in the top two for boys for four consecutive years.”
Other popular names for boys this year include Oliver, Jack, George, Luca, Leo, Theodore, Theo, Elijah, and Arthur.
For girls, top names following Isla are Charlotte, Isabella, Olivia, Lily, Hazel, Harper, Mila, and Mia.
In 2023, Charlotte was the most popular name for girls, with Isla and Amelia rounding out the top three. On the boys' side, Oliver and Luca followed Noah in second and third place.
Meanwhile, the most popular Māori baby names are typically announced around Matariki. In 2023, Aroha and Amaia were the top choices for girls, while Ariki and Wiremu led the list for boys.
The Department of Internal Affairs registered 59,199 births in 2023, with 19,404 unique names recorded.
