It’s almost Matariki Murihiku time when all eyes will be on Queen’s Park starting tonight (Friday).
Organised and funded by the Tūturu Trust and now in its fifth year, the festival is an accumulation of ideas by local art workshop facilitator Sharne Parkinson.
An array of designs are being brought to life through light installations – through the work of several community groups and organisations.
This year a new installation in conjunction with glass artist Phil Newbury will feature glass tiles being suspended in the trees, that will be added to every year.
The stage area will be even bigger than previous years after feedback from people saying how amazing the experience was.
Last year 85,000 people attended the Matariki festival and it runs right up until Tuesday.
Entry is by koha – either online or before the event, or on the night.
There will be buckets to take cash koha stationed around the park and children under 2 are exempt.
The trust is a 100% funded, Not For Profit organisation, and are very lucky to have sponsors from local businesses and funding agencies to make this work.
The board works hard to secure funding throughout the year, but it doesn’t always cover all of the costs.
whatsoninvers.nz founder Mike Sanford said we have been involved with Matariki at Queen’s Park for the last three years as a sponsor.
“It gets better and better every year. Sharne and the team deliver a great community event.”
