State Highway 6 north of Invercargill has been closed tonight after a three-vehicle crash left several people injured.
The Winton-Lorneville Highway is blocked in both directions at Makarewa between Orion Road East and Flora Road East following the incident, which was reported around 6.40pm.
Ambulance services are on scene treating people with moderate and minor injuries. Emergency services are working to clear the area.
A detour has been established for light vehicles only. Northbound traffic should turn right onto Flora Road East, then left onto Actaeon Road, left onto Orion Road East and back onto the Winton-Lorneville Highway. Southbound traffic should follow the route in reverse.
Motorists are being advised to avoid the area entirely and expect significant delays if using alternative routes.
The closure is causing major disruption to traffic flows between Invercargill and northern destinations during the evening peak period. Heavy vehicles unable to use the light vehicle detour will face particularly long delays.
