Three people were seriously injured following a crash in Invercargill after a driver fled from Police in the early hours of the morning. The incident occurred around 1:40am when Police attempted to stop a vehicle on Venus Street, Georgetown. However, the driver refused to stop and sped off. Southern District Commander Superintendent Jason Guthrie confirmed that Police chose not to pursue the fleeing vehicle due to the dangerous driving involved. A short time later, the vehicle crashed into another at the intersection of Janet and Ness Streets. The collision also caused damage to a nearby property, though it sustained only minor damage.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. "St John sent three ambulances and a rapid response vehicle, treating two patients with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries before transporting them to Southland Hospital."
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) attended the crash, with crews from Appleby and Invercargill working to free a person trapped in the vehicle.
The crash left one person from the fleeing vehicle critically injured, while another occupant was seriously injured. An occupant from the other vehicle also sustained critical injuries, with another person suffering minor injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene, and the road remains closed while Police continue to work. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area unless they are local residents.
As per standard protocol, the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority. Police are seeking witnesses and any relevant dashcam or CCTV footage from the area.
