From police bravery and celebrating culture, to saving puppies and the best of Southland’s musical talent, the latest edition of The Life is sure to be a must-read for all Southlanders over the coming holiday period.
Invercargill-based marketing agency Market South has just released the fifth edition of The Life, its annual culture and lifestyle magazine, which promises to tickle the fancy of any and every reader.
This edition of The Life promises stories, profiles and Q & As with the region’s best and brightest, from those still residing in Southland to those afar.
This edition’s cover story features Constable Regan Mauheni, a proud Southlander who was injured in the line of duty in 2016, while based in Rotorua. Regan sustained a brain injury after being hit with shrapnel during an AOS operation in Kawerau in 2016.
While his incident has been well publicised by various media, The Life editor Carla Forbes said it was great to have a unique perspective of the story out to the public, and one that focused more on his incredible recovery.
“Regan was such a breeze with being involved in the magazine and it was great to hear from him how much of a significant impact just having the right mindset can have in someone’s life,” she said.
“Here’s a guy who suffered a brain injury and still has pieces of shrapnel in his brain, yet has one of the most positive and jovial outlooks on life I’ve come across.”
While it was always difficult to condense the number of potential stories into a final product, having no shortage of wonderfully talented Southlanders to profile wasn’t a bad problem to have, Forbes said.
Other feature stories in edition 5 include: the journey of Furever Homes and the work the team does rescuing and re-homing dogs, a showcase on landscape and astro photographer Sam Deuchrass, hair salon owner Natasha King’s work on domestic violence prevention and a series of food and recipe articles.
Joining The Life editorial team in 2017 as deputy editor, Briar Babington said it was rewarding, both for her as a writer and the people in the stories, to be profiling so many amazing Southland heroes and innovators.
“We’re absolutely spoiled for choice with the calibre of astoundingly talented Southlanders.
“As a region, we really do punch well beyond our weight across all industries.”
The publication came about after several conversations between Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt and Forbes, around how to best showcase Southland’s exceptional lifestyle and world-leading innovation.
It is now on the coffee tables of households, reception areas and accommodation providers right throughout Southland, as well as being a staple Christmas gift to offshore relatives.
Edition 5 of The Life is on sale at various retailers around Southland now and online at
