Invercargill’s and New Zealand’s newest hotel is rapidly taking shape.

The whatsoninvers.nz team were taken for an in depth look behind the scenes of The Langland’s Hotel with ILT Communications manager Emma Hunter and Marketing and Innovation executive Angee Shand.

All we can say is that this latest amenity will be a huge boon for the centre of Invercargill.

It’s expected that parts of the 4.5 star hotel on the Dee – Don St corner will open about August with the rest to follow on from that.

The two ladies who are more than excited about how progress is coming along  started us on the ground floor where the new Meld Restaurant and Brew’d Cafe will be situated.

Meld will be the signature restaurant for The Langlands.

They tell us that newly appointed executive chef Jinu Abraham is working on creating food ideas for the the hotel’s portfolio. That includes five eateries and bars along with in room dining for the 78-room hotel, and tailor-made conference and banquet offering.

The eateries will be small and intimate, something that Southlanders have clearly asked for.

Angee Shand says Jinu Abraham is no stranger to setting up hotels so he is bringing so much operational wisdom. Much of the culinary fare will be new and exciting and something we should embrace.

The Langlands will be supporting local operators and producers, right down to having local milk on tap from Farm Fresh South at Woodlands. Farm Fresh South said it was an exciting time for our city and Southland and it’s great to have ILT supporting local food producers.

The ground floor has plenty of brickwork walls which is a nod to the old Kiln restaurant bar that was previously on the site.

The entry for guests checking in is by way of pods as opposed to the conventional reception desk configuration.

Artwork for this area we hope will be rotated from the Southland Museum and Art Gallery’s impressive collection.

The first floor will be a conference centre for up to 100 people and small intimate dining spaces, something that Southlanders had clearly asked for.

Upstairs, yes it was foot power as the elevators are not yet ready to go to the accommodation area.  We can tell you that many of the rooms are being fitted out, carpets and tiles are down, Still some work to do but basically getting things hooked up and connected.

Art work for the suites is going to be sourced from Southland artists.

There have been delays with Covid over the construction period but they’re now at the point where the rubber meets the road with tradies going full bore putting it all together. We can vouch for that judging by the noise and the pace of work onsite.

There has also been plenty of work done behind the scenes to get The Langlands hotel in front of tourism operators nationally and internationally.
