The cooling of the afternoon temperature didn’t deter over 40 Southland farmers giving surfing a go at Monkey Island late yesterday (Thursday 12th December).
“We were expecting maybe 20 last night but they just kept coming, which was great!” says event organiser Tom Slee.
Everyone received a quick lesson from Southland Surf School Instructor Jess Terrill before hitting the surf.
Wreys Bush Dairy Farmer Debby Egan was one of the first to arrive and last to get out of the sea, “I’m really pleased I came, I enjoyed getting out there doing something I haven’t done before, we will be back next Thursday”.
Meanwhile the Farmlands Otautau team were busy on the BBQ so hot food was ready for when the farmers came finished in the water.
The next Surfing for Farmers event will be on Thursday 17 December at 6pm. The beach venue will be decided on the night but will be either at Riverton, Colac Bay or Monkey Island.
Details will be posted on the Southland Surf School Facebook Page from lunch time on Thursday.
