A huge weekend of Touch took place with tournaments in both Oamaru and Alexandra. Saturday saw our under-12, under-14 and under-16 boys and girls teams take on the best of Canterbury and Otago. All teams took some valuable experiences from the tournament and now know the standard required when the South Island IPS takes place in Christchurch next weekend.
The highlight from a Southland perspective was the Invercargill based under-12 girls’ team making the final and only narrowly going down to Canterbury 3-2. Huge thanks to the Waitaki District Council for their efforts to make the fields available after the region was battered by heavy rain in the lead up to the tournament. Thanks to St Kevin’s College also for making their grounds available so the tournament could go ahead.
Sunday saw the second annual Touch Southland Development Tournament which featured under-10, under-11, under-12 mixed and under-13 sides from around Southland, Queenstown and Central Otago take part. Played in hot and sunny conditions at Alexandra’s Pioneer Park, the tournament ran extremely well and was a great way for our development sides to cap off their seasons. A big thank you to Karen Gallagher for organising the two Cromwell invitational teams, also to the personnel from Roxburgh who brought along two teams to the tournament.
