West to southwest gales for parts of central and southern New Zealand. Heavy snow for the far south of the South Island.

A strong westerly flow lies across central and southern New Zealand. A cold front is forecast to move onto the far south of the South Island tonight (Wednesday), followed by a change to strong, cold southwesterlies, and bringing a period of heavy snow to some places.

Strong Wind Watches are in force for Taihape, coastal parts of Clutha and Southland including Stewart Island.

Heavy Snow Watch:

Area: Fiordland south of Dagg Sound, Southland south of Mossburn and Clutha.
Valid: 14 hours from 2:00am to 4:00pm Thursday
Forecast: Periods of heavy snow above 400 metres. Snow amounts may approach warning criteria.

Strong Wind Watch:

Area: Coastal parts of Clutha and Southland, including Stewart Island
Valid: 18 hours from 7:00pm Wednesday to 1:00pm Thursday
Forecast: Westerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
