Steve Mitchell has officially resigned from his position as CEO of Rugby Southland, a role he held with distinction over the past four years. He will be returning to his native Nelson to take up the CEO position at Tasman Rugby. Mitchell’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter of leadership and growth for the organisation.
In a sincere farewell letter to the Rugby Southland community, Mitchell expressed his deep appreciation for the support he received during his tenure. He reflected on the organization’s achievements, noting the increase in player numbers, the improved financial health, and enhanced representative results and player conduct.
“When I applied for the role, I stated that 3-5 years minimum, and that I intended to set up the systems, fill them with the right people and then head home,” Mitchell stated. “I can proudly say that although not completely satisfied, we have achieved, and that Rugby Southland is in a far better position than when I arrived.”
Mitchell also highlighted several key accomplishments under his leadership, such as stronger ties with major stakeholders like the Highlanders, the establishment of an independent judiciary, heightened community engagement, and an increase in sponsorship and funding.
Expressing gratitude for the collective effort that spurred these changes, Mitchell acknowledged the staff, board members, sponsors, and community supporters. “With the leadership of our current chairman, the focus of the Board, and growing competency within the staff, I believe that Rugby Southland is in a good position to navigate the complex world of provincial union rugby,” he remarked.
