Welcome to What’s On Invers: Home & Garden. As spring arrives, our new section brings you seasonal ideas, practical tips, and expert advice for Southland living. This week we’re looking at lawns – how to revive tired patches and sow fresh grass just in time for summer.

After months of cold, damp weather, Southland lawns are often left looking patchy and tired. Early September is the perfect time to rejuvenate or start a new lawn.

Getting started

  • Prepare the soil by raking out moss, weeds, and stones. If needed, add a layer of topsoil for better drainage and root growth.
  • Choose a hardy grass mix such as perennial ryegrass and fescue, ideal for cooler southern conditions.
  • Scatter seed evenly, then lightly rake and water. Cover with a fine layer of soil or compost to protect against birds.

Patch repair
For bare patches, loosen the soil, apply seed, and water regularly. Keep the area moist until seedlings establish.

Feeding established lawns
Apply a slow-release fertiliser to established grass now – it will kickstart growth after winter dormancy.💡 Tip: Light, frequent watering is better than heavy soaking for young lawns. What’s On Invers: Home & Garden (Southland’s #1 local news and lifestyle platform).
