Sport Southland has nearly quarter of a million dollars available to help fund community-based programmes and projects targeting children and young people, with a focus on those most at risk of missing out or being less active.

The Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa fund is administered locally by regional sports trust Sport Southland on behalf of Sport New Zealand.

Sport Southland has already funded more than $100,000 through Tū Manawa, including, amongst others, supporting Southland’s Fijian community, a partnership between Waihopai football club and Special Olympics, a youth summer social basketball series based at South Alive, tennis coaching in Te Anau, Active Mums in Northern Southland and low- cost physical activity opportunities in Bluff.

Over the next 12 months, Sport Southland aims to fund a further $241,000 into the Southland community.

Applications of under $10,000 are considered as they are received, while applications over $10,000 go to an independent panel. The next funding round for over $10,000 applications closes on February 28.

Sport Southland chief executive Brendon McDermott said a key focus of the fund was ensuring initiatives would provide quality experiences and meet predetermined outcomes.

“Our Tū Manawa team at Sport Southland can work alongside organisations to develop ideas through to successful applications. If you have got a great concept across the spectrum of play, active recreation and sport then we would love to hear from you when you start your application,” McDermott said.

“The application process is pretty straightforward, especially if you get in touch with us at the outset. Once applications have been approved, we can get the money out the door really quickly. We are particularly interested in concepts designed for targeted communities. We are looking forward to supporting some really innovative initiatives designed to get more Southlanders active.”

Basketball coach Dan Peck has been piloting a youth summer 3v3 series based at South Alive with support from the Tū Manawa fund and said the fund was a fantastic initiative.

“Sport Southland are more than happy to work alongside you to help make the process easier and make it happen,” he said.
