A temporary partial closure of Spey Street, located between Dee and Leven streets, due to safety concerns is now open. This follows reports of unsecured roofing iron and loose materials from old Briscoes building, that was fire damaged back in September posing risks in the current high winds Invercargill has been experiencing.

The road was reopened at 2:20pm by roading contractor Fulton Hogan crew T & Jackalyn.

Matthew Keil, Invercargill City Council Manager – Infrastructure Operations, said If anybody in the community notices any weather-related issues around the city, please call Invercargill City Council on 211 1777.

A recent comment on our Facebook post by a community member highlighted the impact of the windy conditions: “A bit of metal came down from the Pall Mall building and hit a couple of cars, fire brigade was there for a few hours yesterday.” This incident underscores the importance of the current safety measures and the need for community vigilance during such weather events.

The winds last night meant the roading crew were unable to get the membrane completed on the Dee Street/North Road, which has resulted in not being able to pave last night. The flow on affect is that they won’t be completed by the end of Thursdays shift, and will be back to complete this on Sunday night.

Invercargill City Council have also added roading updates for next week.

Next week, Downers is resealing several streets around Invercargill.

Sunday: Glen Way, Glengarry Crescent, Cree Street, and a section of Yarrow Street North and South

Monday: Gordon Street, Roy Street, Rugby Street, Racecourse Road (near Layard St), a section of Layard Street, St Andrew Street, Bourke Street, Ure Street St, and Cheyne Street.

Tuesday: Lansdowne Street, Maitland Street, Flora Road East and Princes Street

Traffic management will be in place, so please follow the detours and temporary speed limits.

This work will be completed between 7am – 7pm each weekday. It does require good weather, so if it rains, it may be postponed

Footpaths will remain open, however, there will be no on-street parking during the day.

There may be some loose stone chips on the road after the resealing is complete – this is normal and part of the process. After a few days, our contractors will return to sweep them up.
