• Export Southland Gala recognised local businesses for their innovative contributions to global markets.
  • Ethan Todd won the NZAS Innovation in Export Award for his Backlanz bipod range.
  • The DHL Mentorship went to George Munro - Hokonui’s Laura Todd for her lambswool products.

Southland’s most innovative exporters were celebrated at the prestigious DHL Export Gala Dinner on Friday night. Held at the Ascot Park Hotel, the event brought together 240 businesses and their supporters to recognise the region’s contributions to global markets.

Backlanz founder Ethan Todd took home the NZAS Innovation in Export Award, thanks to his ultra-lightweight bipod range. These products are manufactured in New Zealand and assembled in Invercargill, with international demand, including an order from the US Navy.

Laura Todd, founder of George Munro - Hokonui, received the DHL Mentorship Award. Her young company specialises in lambswool products made from Perendale wool, with customers spanning countries like Sweden, Scotland, and Japan.

The Export Southland Grant was shared by Davaar & Co and Resolution Farming App, as judges found it too difficult to choose just one winner. The grant helps local businesses involved in exporting to focus on sustainable practices and upskilling their workforce.

The Graham Dick Memorial Trophy, supported by McIntyre Dick, was awarded to agriculture pioneer Keith Neylon for his contributions to the export industry. Over the years, Neylon has been a leader in deer, sheep, and cattle farming, as well as dairy and meat processing, including the founding of Blue River Dairy, which has had a significant impact on New Zealand’s primary industries.

The DHL Export Southland Gala is held every two years, alternating with the Southland Business Excellence Awards, and aims to represent exporters, promote networking and education, recognise business achievements, and assist start-ups.
