Southland’s state of emergency has been extended until Friday, 7 November, as the region continues to recover from last week’s destructive winds that tore through Invercargill, Bluff, and rural areas.
Southland District Mayor Rob Scott said that while significant progress had been made restoring services and clearing damage, much work remains.
“There is still a great deal more to do with areas yet to be assessed and the damage managed, with many parks, reserves and playgrounds closed until they can be declared safe,” Mayor Scott said.
“We want everyone to stay safe, and I urge everyone to keep away from closed areas, trees, and powerlines.”
The decision to extend the state of emergency was made following advice from Emergency Management Southland officials, allowing continued coordination of recovery and welfare efforts.
Mayoral Relief Fund Activated
Alongside the extension, the Southland Mayoral Relief Fund has been activated to help individuals, families, and communities affected by the severe wind event.
The Government has contributed $75,000, with a further $50,000 from the Ministry for Primary Industries (split between Southland and Clutha).
Emergency Management Southland Controller Mark Radcliffe said community generosity could make a tangible difference.
“We know this has been a tough time for our region, and many are still recovering. For those in a position to help, donating to the Mayoral Relief Fund is one of the most direct ways to support our neighbours and communities as they rebuild.”
All donations go directly towards helping those most affected — providing emergency needs, essential household items, and recovery costs.
Applications for support are now open, with details available on the Emergency Management Southland website.
Power and Infrastructure Recovery
PowerNet reports around 2,200 Southland and 1,470 Otago customers remain without power. Crews continue working to restore supply, but repairs are complex due to widespread damage.
Residents are urged not to touch or clear fallen power lines, and to report issues via 0800 808 587, Facebook Messenger, or PowerNet’s online outage form.
Community hubs remain open across the region, offering power, internet access, and showers for affected residents.
Parks, Safety, and Local Updates
Residents are reminded to stay away from closed parks, reserves, and playgrounds.
Many areas in Invercargill, Bluff, and across Southland District remain closed and unsafe, with clean-up teams still working to remove dangerous debris and fallen trees.
Several sports fields in Invercargill have now reopened — residents can check the Invercargill City Council Facebook page for up-to-date details.
Cleanup efforts also continue around the Gore District; updates are being shared via the Gore District Council Facebook page.
Officials have reiterated that people should not travel to collect fallen firewood or debris, as it poses serious safety risks and can hinder emergency crews.
Financial and Welfare Support
Anyone needing financial assistance can check eligibility through Work and Income (MSD) for standard emergency products to help with urgent or unexpected costs.
You do not need to be an MSD client to apply, though asset and income limits apply.
Insurance remains the first port of call for property damage, and MSD cannot fund generators or fuel.
Smaller generators are still needed for residential use and can be sourced from retailers such as Mitre 10 and other hardware or electrical supply stores.
If you’re concerned about someone who may need extra support, contact the Welfare Team on 0800 890 127 (9am–4.30pm) or email [email protected].
Mental health support is available anytime by free texting 1737 or visiting 1737.org.nz.
Community Spirit: BBQs and Local Events
In true Southland spirit, communities are rallying together with a series of free community BBQs hosted by the Rural Support Trust, Emergency Management Southland, DairyNZ, and other local organisations.
Recent events in Woodlands and Riverton drew around 140 people combined, with Mayor Rob Scott attending to thank volunteers and residents.
Upcoming BBQs include:
- Tonight (Thursday 30 Oct): Tokanui Tavern & Dipton Golf Course (5.30–8pm)
- Friday 31 Oct: Otautau Sports Complex (11am–1pm) and Mossburn Community Centre (6pm)
No RSVP is needed — everyone is welcome. More events are planned in the coming days, with updates on the Southland Rural Support Trust Facebook page.
