  • Stags play North Harbour at Bekhuis Park this Saturday, marking the end of the season.

Rugby Park in Invercargill has been temporarily renamed Bekhuis Park to honour Josh Bekhuis as he prepares to play his 144th game for the SBS Bank Southland Stags. This milestone makes him the most capped player in the team’s history, surpassing the previous record held by Jason Rutledge. The new name was unveiled this morning at a special ceremony attended by Bekhuis, his family, and Rugby Southland representatives.

“Today is a special day for me and my family,” said Bekhuis. “It means a lot, especially for my family. Not being a common name in New Zealand (Bekhuis), my grandfather came over in the 50s, and I’ve always been proud to get it out there. To have the park named after me for the weekend is awesome!”

The renaming celebrates not only Bekhuis’ incredible contribution to Southland rugby but also the unwavering support of his family throughout his career. “Being here today to unveil Bekhuis Park is truly special,” said Rugby Southland’s Commercial and Marketing Manager, Jack King. “Josh’s dedication and passion for the game have made a lasting impact on our community, and this tribute is well-deserved.”

The park will carry the Bekhuis name for the week, encouraging fans to celebrate this milestone in local sports history. Supporters can attend the open captains run this Friday from 11.30am to 12.15pm or the game against North Harbour, which kicks off at 4.35pm on Saturday.

The coaches have announced the squad for Saturday’s match at Bekhuis Park (Rugby Park), which includes Isaac Te Tamaki, who is set to play his 50th game for the Stags. Kaea Nikora-Balloch is also poised for a potential debut off the bench, adding to the significance of this match for the team.
