The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Southland Hospital has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since opening on December 12, 2013, the Family Room has been a vital resource for families with children receiving hospital care. Over 1200 families have used the facility for longer stays, and many more have visited as day guests for some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Located near the Children’s and Neo Natal wards, the Family Room provides a non-clinical, homely environment where families can take a break from the hospital setting. Helen Walker, the RMHC NZ Family Room Supervisor, has been a cornerstone of the facility, offering warmth and comfort to families since its inception. She reflects on the diverse experiences of the families who have stayed there, all united by the common purpose of the Family Room: to take care of daily needs so families can concentrate on their children.

Ang Simpson, a Community Advisor, emphasizes the crucial role played by local volunteers and supporters in reaching this 10-year mark. The community’s support has been essential in keeping the Family Room operational, making this a shared achievement for the entire Southland region.

As the Family Room looks forward to its next decade, the focus remains on providing ongoing support to families during challenging times. This space of hope and care is a testament to the dedication and efforts of the Southland community. RMHC New Zealand welcomes donations to continue their mission, inviting people to text LOVE to 4483 for an instant $3 donation.
