Last night, rural firefighters rushed to deal with a suspicious fire among the vegetation in the Tiwai Pt area of Southland. The call came in at 10.45 pm for a fire spanning 30 meters by 20 meters. Teams from Kingsville, Invercargill, and Tiwai were the first responders. They soon called for more help as they headed to the scene.
Amanda Ensor, a shift manager for Fire and Emergency NZ in the southern region, reported that the fire is now under control. However, rural fire teams remain on-site to ensure the area is safe. Fortunately, the fire did not damage any buildings, and no one was hurt. Despite this, the cause of the fire is suspicious, prompting an investigation scheduled for today.
In addition to this incident, southern fire crews were busy with a house fire in Otautau. Like the Tiwai Pt fire, investigations are underway for these incidents.
