Great South has received national acclaim for its work on the Murihiku Southland Aquaculture Pathway, taking home a Highly Commended award at the Economic Development New Zealand (EDNZ) Best Practice Awards. The award was presented in the Excellence in Sector and Cluster Development category, recognising successful initiatives that drive innovation, growth and collaboration across key sectors.

Great South was one of five national finalists in the category. The award shines a spotlight on the organisation’s efforts to support Southland’s aquaculture potential through strategic partnerships and regional leadership.

Chief Executive Chami Abeysinghe said, “Our Aquaculture Pathway has been a genuine collective effort and it is encouraging to see that recognised on the national stage.” She added that the award reflects the regional commitment to building sustainable economic growth, encouraging investment and creating long-term opportunities for local communities.

The Murihiku Southland Aquaculture Pathway was developed to lay out a clear, coordinated approach to building a thriving aquaculture sector in the region. The pathway draws on input from iwi, local councils, government agencies, industry representatives and the wider community. This inclusive approach helps to ensure the region’s environmental values are protected while economic opportunities are developed.

Mrs Abeysinghe also credited Great South’s General Manager of Regional Strategy, Bobbi Brown, for leading the development of the pathway. “Bobbi has led this work with real passion and determination. Her leadership has been instrumental in bringing our partners together and ensuring the pathway is grounded in strong research, collaboration and a shared ambition for Murihiku Southland,” she said.

The pathway lays out a practical plan for advancing sustainable aquaculture, with clearly defined research needs, partnership models and future actions. It aims to support both regional and national goals by promoting a responsible and forward-looking aquaculture industry.

Mrs Abeysinghe said the award not only validates the progress already made but also helps build momentum for the future. “We will continue to work closely with iwi, industry and our regional partners to advance the pathway and bring its potential to life. This award shows we are on the right track, and our region should be proud of what we have achieved together.”
