A radio voice from the past is returning.

Former general manager of The Radio Network of stations in Southland, Lee Piper is returning as host of the new The Country Sports Breakfast show.

Piper’s show will be heard on the AM frequencies vacated by the sudden shutdown of Radio Sport at the end of March.

His daily weekday show will serve up a copious amount of heartland New Zealand focused content and delivering a decent sized dose of sports content.

Popular rural show The Country with Jamie MacKay will also broadcast across the Gold AM network every weekday from midday, when it is also broadcast on Newstalk ZB.

Gold AM will broadcast Newstalk ZB Sports live sports commentary (Super Rugby and ANZ Netball) on weekends and weeknights. Commentaries of Sting games will be back on the radio, yay!!

From a strategic perspective, Gold AM targets heartland New Zealand, particularly those aged 45 and above.

For music fans GoldFM will broadcast of FM frequencies currently held by The Mix.

Lee Piper has had a long association with sport in Southland forming The Scream Team with Jamie MacKay on Hokonui then providing Rugby and Netball commentaries on the NewstalkZB and Radio Sport networks for several years.

Piper was also prominent in establishing the hugely successful Southern Sting netball franchise.

The Country Sports Breakfast with Lee Piper starts on July 1.
